Veteran journalist G Sekharan Nair passes away

Veteran journalist and former Thiruvananthapuram bureau chief of “Mathrubhumi” Daily, G Sekharan Nair passed away at a private hospital here, family members said. He was 75 and was undergoing treatment for heart-related ailments for some time, they said. Nair, who had joined the Mathrubhumi during the 1980s, worked in various bureaus and the desk of the well-known daily for several years.

Army camp shooting kills 5 soldiers in Philippines

Four soldiers were killed and another critically wounded after a soldier ran amok and fired at sleeping soldiers inside an army camp in northern Mindanao, south of the Philippines, said the military. The alleged murderer was also shot dead, Xinhua news agency reported.

The incident happened at around 1:10 p.m. local time inside Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro City. The four victims died instantly at the scene, command duty officer Major Alden Brinas was quoted as saying in a report.

Hans Modrow, who as the last Communist prime minister of East Germany oversaw democratic reforms that opened the way to German reunification, has died at age 95, Germany’s hard-left Die Linke party said. “Last night Hans Modrow left us at the age of 95. With this, our party loses an important personality,” the party, successor to the East German Communist Party, said in a statement. Modrow had said he would help turn East Germany into a democracy when he became prime minister of a communist-led transition government on Nov. 13, 1989, four days after the opening of the Berlin Wall that had divided East and West Berlin for 28 years.
